It has been revealed that the four deaths, recently recorded at the Kumasi Academy Senior High School in Ashanti were due to meningitis.

According to Graphic Online’s Kumasi reporter, Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei Mensah made this known at a press conference on the school’s campus at Asokore Mampong on Wednesday morning.

The Regional Minister explained that if all the four cases had been sent to the same facility, the cause would have been detected earlier.

Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges.

This inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis is usually caused by bacteria or viruses, but can be a result of injury, cancer, or certain drugs.
