The Kumasi Traditional Council has suspended all funerals throughout the Ashanti kingdom until the burial of the late Asantehema, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II who died last Monday November 14, 2016. Drumming and noise making have all been suspended.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting on Thursday by the Kumasi Traditional council after members were officially informed of the death of the mother of the Asantehene, Nana Afia Kobi Ampem II. She was said to have died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 111 , after reigning for 39 years.

An official statement by the Manhyia Palace announced that the traditional one week celebration will be held at Manhyia on Thursday,  November 24,  2016.

The late Asantehemaa was the 13th Queen mother of the Asante Kingdom and the mother of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The suspension of funerals and noise making at this time of the year has left many bereaved families panning funerals and politicians in a limbo. It is not clear if this suspension will affect political rallies in Ashanti region.
