Addo-Kufour cautions against hasty implementation of free SHS policy

Dr Kwame Addo- Kuffour

A former Defence Minister and a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is urging caution in the implementation of government’s flagship education policy, the Free Senior High School.

Dr. Kwame Addo-Kufuor says a hasty introduction of the education policy could negatively affect the education quality and create setbacks.

He acknowledges that the Free SHS policy is good, however, he believes it needs a year or two to take off when the national economy can absorb the cost without resorting to foreign funds.

Dr. Addo-Kufour who is also former Member of Parliament for Manhyia told Nhyira News exclusively that government should just apologise to Ghanaians for what would be a delay to implement the policy this year in order to buy more time for a more successful implementation process.

President Nana Akufo-Addo announced in February this year that government would fund the cost of public senior high schools (SHS) for all those who qualify for entry from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards.

Meanwhile, Dr. Addo-Kufour has commended the government for its efforts at securing the $15 billion Chinese funding, noting that the facility will help to solve Ghana’s unemployment, especially when the proposed bauxite extraction begins, and rail transport from South to the North of the country improves.

On “galamsey” the former Defence Minister believes the depletion of the natural environment is an unbearable situation, warning that care must be taken to avert a major environmental catastrophe.

He, therefore, pleads with Ghanaians to accept in good faith government’s decision to suspend all small-scale mining activities.
